Andrew Smith Hallidie

Early life

Andrew Smith Hallidie was born as plain Andrew Smith. His birthplace is variously quoted as London in England. His grandfather, Smith, a Scottish schoolmaster and soldier during the Napoleonic wars, had served at Waterloo. His father, Andrew Smith, had been born in Fleming, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, in 1798, and his mother, Julia Johnstone Smith, was from Lockerbie, Dumfrieshire. He later adopted the name Hallidie in honor of his uncle, Sir Andrew Hallidie, who had been a royal physician to King William IV and to Queen Victoria.

Andrew Smith’s father, also called Andrew Smith, was an engineer and inventor with several patents to his name, most importantly those for the making of wire ropes, granted from 1835 to 1849. The younger Andrew Smith was initially apprenticed to a machine shop and drawing office. In 1852 both father and son set sail for California, where the father had an interest in some gold mines in Mariposa County. These proved disappointing, and the father returned to England in 1853. The son, however, remained in California, and became a gold miner whilst also working as a blacksmith, surveyor and builder of bridges.

In 1856, whilst working on the construction of a flume at a mine at American Bar, Hallidie was consulted over the rapid rate of wear on the ropes used to lower cars of rock from the mine to the mill. These ropes were wearing out in 75 days. Hallidie improvised machinery to make a replacement wire rope, which lasted two years, and in the process began wire rope manufacture in California.

Wire rope and bridges

Hallidie abandoned mining in 1857 and returned to San Francisco. Under the name of A. S. Hallidie & Co., he commenced the manufacture of wire rope in a building at Mason and Chestnut Streets, using the machinery from American Bar.

Hallidie was also heavily involved in bridge building. During 1861-2, he constructed bridges across the Klamath River at Weitchpeck, at Nevada City, across the American River at Folsom, and across the Bear, Trinity, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne rivers. In 1863 he built a bridge across the Fraser River, 10 miles upstream of Yale at Alexandra in British Columbia.

Also in 1863, Hallidie married Martha Elizabeth Woods. They had no children. In 1864, he became a United States citizen. In 1865, he gave up bridge building in order to devote himself entirely to his wire rope manufacturing business, which was experiencing increased demand from the silver mines on the Comstock Lode.

In 1867, Hallidie invented the Hallidie ropeway, a form of aerial tramway used for transporting ore and other material across mountainous districts, which he successfully installed a number of locations, and later patented.

Cable cars

Accounts differ as to exactly how involved Hallidie was in the inception of the Clay Street Hill Railway. One version has him taking over the promotion of the line when the original promoter, Benjamin Brooks, failed to raise the necessary capital. In another version, Hallidie was the instigator, inspired by a desire to reduce the suffering incurred by the horses that hauled streetcars up Jackson Street, from Kearny to Stockton Street.

There is also doubt as to when exactly the first run of the cable car occurred. The franchise required a first run no later than August 1, 1873, however at least one source reports that the run took place a day late, on August 2, but that the city chose not to void the franchise. Some accounts say that the first gripman hired by Hallidie looked down the steep hill from Jones and refused to operate the car, so Hallidie took the grip himself and ran the car down the hill and up again without any problems.

The engineer of the Clay Street line was William Eppelsheimer. However, given Hallidie’s previous experience of cables and cable haulage systems, it seems unlikely that he did not contribute to the design of the system.

The Clay Street line started regular service on September 1, 1873 and was a financial success. In addition, Hallidie’s patents on the cable car design were stringently enforced on cable car promoters around the world, and made him a rich man.

Other activities

Hallidie occupied many positions in San Francisco society. He served as a regent of the University of California from 1868 until his death, and as a trustee and vice-president of the San Francisco Mechanics Institute in 1864 and president from 1868 to 1877 and from 1893 to 1895. In 1873, Hallidie stood for election to the California State Senate, and in 1875 he stood for election as mayor of San Francisco, but in both cases he was defeated.

Hallidie served as trustee of the First Unitarian Church, and as its moderator in 1883 and 1884. He held memberships in the American Society of Inventors, American Geographical Society, California Academy of Sciences, and other scientific and literary bodies. He was a member of the old California Historical Society and of the Pacific-Union, Olympic, and Sierra clubs.

A. S. Hallidie & Co. became the California Wire Works in 1883 with Hallidie as president. In 1895, it was sold to Washburn and Moen Co., the oldest manufacturers of wire in the United States (established in 1831).

Hallidie died at the age of 65 at his San Francisco residence.

Carl Smith, legendary country singer and original honky tonk hitmaker, died on January 16 at his home in Fanklin, TN. He was 82. Smith, affectionately called “Mr. Country,” was also the ex-husband of June Carter Cash and a respected veteran who had over 30 No. 1 hits throughout his career which began in the 1950’s.

A native of Maynardville, TN, Smith was known for his special brand of country music love songs such as “You Are The One,” “This Orchard Means Goodbye,” “(When You Feel Like You’re in Love) Don’t Just Stand There,” as well as hits such as “Hey Joe!,” “Let’s Live a Little,” “Cut Across Shorty,” “Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way,” and “Loose Talk.” According to a country music blog, upon his retirement in the latter part of the 1970’s, Smith was officially inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2003.

Smith’s long career first began in 1944 when he served in the military during World War II at the WROL radio station in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then performed alongside bands and artists such as Skeets Williamson, Molly O’Day, and Archie Campbell. Around that time, Smith was also writing songs and producing demos, one of which reached Troy Martin, who at that time, was an executive for Peer-Southern. Martin, in turn, brought the demo to Jack Stapp, a WSM Nashville executive, and Don Law, producer for Columbia. On the strength of his demo, Smith was signed to the label, and the rest is history.

In 1950, he appeared on the Grand Ole Opry as the guest of Hank Williams who also performed that same day; he eventually became a regular until 1956. His first hit with Columbia, “Let’s Live a Little,” came the following year and peaked at the No. 2 spot in the charts. Within a year, he had more hits including the classic country music love songs “If Teardrops Were Pennies” and his first No. 1, “Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way.” This same year also marked his marriage to June Carter, whom he would later divorce. His daughter with Carter, Carlene Carter, later became a country singer just like her famous parents. In 1957, Smith married another singer, Goldie Hill, who passed away in 2005.

As mentioned in another country music blog, aside from his hit songs, Smith was also known as one of the first group of young country stars to cross over to television and movies. Smith appeared on the “Main Street Music Hall,” and other shows such as “Stars Of Country Music.” In 1961, he also made a guest appearance on “Four Star Jubilee,” a country television series which aired over at ABC. Smith would eventually go on to host his own show, “Carl Smith’s Country Music Hall” for US and Canadian audiences.  

As a successful singer, Smith stayed with Columbia Records until 1975, and then transferred to ABC/Hickory. It is with this label that he eventually decided to announce his retirement in the latter part of the 1970’s.

Known for his unique brand of country music love songs, Mr. Country will surely be missed by his fans and by the entire Nashville community.

There’s just no argument about it.  Drug overdose can either be accidental or intentional.  It happens when an individual takes more than the usual medically recommended dose. However, some people may be more sensitive to certain medications that their metabolism cannot stand the potency of the drug resulting in adverse effects such as overdose.
It can happen to people of any age. Accidental overdose is most common in very young children (from crawling age to about 5 years) while intentional overdose involves mostly adolescents and adults in order to harm themselves.  Those who do it on purpose may be suffering from underlying mental health conditions, as well as emotional problems such as depression and anxiety disorder.
Celebrities are prone to drug overdose due to the stress and pressure their career and lifestyle bring.  Take the case of River Phoenix who collapsed and died of a drug overdose on the pavement outside of a rock club during Halloween night in 1993 at age 23.  Don Simpson, who was one of Hollywood’s most successful producers of the 80′s & 90′s with hits like Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Flashdance, The Rock, died of a drug overdose Jan 1996. Actor John Belushi of Animal House & The Blues Brothers died of a drug overdose at 33 years old.  And just recently, reality t.v. star and heiress Anna Nicole Smith.
She was hotness personified. She did not only grace the cover of Playboy but even bagged that coveted title of  “Playmate of the Year” in 1993.  The bunny mag made her into an overnight sensation that sent men everywhere to keep asking for more.  And that included Paul Marciano, Co-Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of one of today’s most recognized and influential brand names in the fashion industry, Guess?, who gave Anna her ticket to the glamorous life of modelling, and eventually, showbiz.  
Anna Nicole Smith, who was born Vicki Lynn Hogan on November 28, 1967, in Houston, Texas rose to fame and headed in the same direction as the screen goddess legend, Marilyn Monroe.  And just like her idol, Anna Nicole experienced celebrity status as well as a life of tribulations.  At the age of 17, Anna (then Vicki) married Billy Smith who sired her a son they called Daniel.  The relationship was short-lived so Anna began working as a topless dancer in one of the clubs in Houston to be able to raise her son and to pay the bills.  She was discovered by a photographer and made her realized that she could use her body to fulfill her dreams.  
Unfortunately, after a series of controversies such as marrying a very senior citizen, 80-year old oil tycoon Howard Marshall II, bitter court battles between her secretary, son-in-law, an ex-lover, and a slimming product, Anna Nicole Smith was found unconscious in her Florida hotel room on Feb 8, 2007, and was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital.
The headline reads: “An accidental overdose of prescription drugs killed former reality TV star and Playboy playmate Anna Nicole Smith”.  According to Seminole tribal police Chief Charlie Tiger, the case was already closed.  “We are convinced, based on extensive review of the evidence, that this case is an accidental overdose with no other criminal element present,” said Tiger at a news conference announcing Smith’s autopsy results.
Howard K. Stern, Smith’s lawyer and rumored lover, sent a statement calling the death a tragic accident.  Read by his own attorney, Lilly Ann Sanchez, “At no time was there any indication of wrongdoing, whatsoever,” she said. “It’s horrible, it’s painful, it’s tragic, but it is an accident.”  Media reports implicating Stern in the overdose accident of Smith was considered “outrageous speculations” by Sanchez.  She said that Stern did not feel vindicated for he lost the most important person in his life, emphasizing that he loved Anna completely.
Several prescription medications were discovered inside the hotel room and were all under the name of both Smith and Stern.  Joshua Perper, Broward County medical examiner, said prescription and over-the-counter drugs were found in Smith’s system, including three antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs.  Toxicology testing also revealed the presence of human growth hormone and chloral hydrate, a depressant to induce sleep.  
According to Perper, the drugs in Smith’s system acted on the respiration and circulation systems and basically shut them down.  Contrary to speculations, he did not believe that Smith tried to kill herself due to the large amount of chloral hydrate remaining in the bottle, and the normal levels of the other medications in her system.
Autopsy results showed evidence that Smith had an abscess in her left buttock that had been perforated by a needle, probably caused by the injections of either the growth hormone or vitamin B-12.   Such perforation allowed the bacteria entry into Smith’s blood causing a high fever in the days prior to her death. She was being treated with Tamiflu and Cipro, an antiviral medication and the other an antibiotic.  Perper theorized that this would have not happened had Anna Nicole sought treatment for the fever and infection at a hospital where she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to take the chloral hydrate.  
The remains of Anna Nicole Smith was buried in the Bahamas last March 2, 2007 next to the grave of her son, Daniel, who died in September, shortly after the birth of her daughter, Dannielynn. It is interesting to know that his son’s death was also ruled as an accidental overdose of three antidepressant medications: methadone, Lexapro and Zoloft.
