Meet the Real Adam Smith

                                Meet the Real Adam Smith

Time to debunk the propaganda and myths: Modern-day American capitalism is not totally synonymous with free enterprise; making money is not necessarily the same thing as creating wealth; Wall Street and big government are but flip sides of the same power structure; the big-time money makers behind the scenes who finance the careers of political leaders and, in fact, write for them the laws that make their dealings legal are not entrepreneurs in the true sense of the word.

In his iconic The Wealth of Nations  (1776), Adam Smith exposed and warned against the kind of corrupt laws and customs that in his day stifled free markets. Unfortunately, few mass media pundits nowadays have read the book or, if they have, they deliberately ignore its message, latching instead on the author’s “invisible hand” simile, quite out of context, to justify the unbridled greed of making money for its own sake. They conveniently fail to mention that Adam Smith was first and foremost a moral philosopher, not the amoral, dog-eat-dog economist that he has been portrayed to be, as is evident in his other classic, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759).

Adam Smith’s moral philosophy was simple enough. He rejected as unnatural the two conflicting philosophies of his day, that social order could be achieved only by means of a strong dictatorship or by promoting a Christ-like brotherly love among the citizenry. He realistically held that humans at bottom were selfish creatures, concerned primarily with their individual survival. Thus, the only way to assure social stability was by allowing them to freely exchange labor, goods, and services for profit. If you have something that I want and I have something that you want, and if no king or deity prohibits us from trading what we want from each other, and if whatever those wants are, are not harmful to society, then despite our religious and political differences, whether we like each other or not, we can live in harmony. And if others approach us with better deals, then, to maintain our trading relationship, we would have to trump our competitors with even better deals. Taken at a mega level, it was clear to Smith that the whole of society, as if guided by an “invisible hand,” would benefit from this competition.

Therefore, the main, if not the sole, role of government, according to Smith, was to assure that the competition was free and fair, and, moreover, that the competitors were imbued with a moral conscience, for otherwise the completion would degenerate into the law of the jungle. In his calm, philosophical voice, Smith noted how in his day the overlong terms of apprenticeship (a form of slave labor), the local restrictions against laborers from outside communities, the collusion among wealthy owners of land and capital to set prices, the stashing of bank gold deposits in private coffers and covering withdrawls with unsecured paper notes –stealing the gold, in effect– were, among other ruses, preventing the “invisible hand” from working its magic.

In modern-day America, free enterprise as Adam Smith envisioned it is, for the most part, alive and well among proprietors of shops, restaurant and other small business on Main Street. But the convoluted collusions between big government and Wall Street tell an entirely different story. The name of the game at this level is not to enable a free, fair marketplace but to manipulate it by whatever means necessary. And if the collusions at times take illegal twists, you can wager that laws will be enacted to make the twists legal. And morality, of course, never enters the picture.

Overpaid CEO’s, high power lobbyists, corrupt politicians, and others of their ilk have plunged America, and much of the world with it, into a deep, protracted recession.  Sill, it may be argued that in some mysterious, elliptical way that only they have the brains to understand, they are contributing to our long-range economic wellbeing. Maybe the crumbs they leave behind after gorging themselves on shareholder and taxpayer money is profit enough for us ordinary folk at the bottom rungs of the pecking order. In the real world, after all, the losers are many and the big winners few.  But those who buy this argument can’t invoke Adam Smith for support.  That was not at all what he meant by the “invisible hand.”

Adam Smith, for the record, was a man of modest tastes and means. The fabled guru of capitalism was no capitalist. He never owned a business or held a private sector job. His most remunerative employment was in the public sector as Commissioner of Customs in Edinburgh.

Andrew Smith Hallidie

Early life

Andrew Smith Hallidie was born as plain Andrew Smith. His birthplace is variously quoted as London in England. His grandfather, Smith, a Scottish schoolmaster and soldier during the Napoleonic wars, had served at Waterloo. His father, Andrew Smith, had been born in Fleming, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, in 1798, and his mother, Julia Johnstone Smith, was from Lockerbie, Dumfrieshire. He later adopted the name Hallidie in honor of his uncle, Sir Andrew Hallidie, who had been a royal physician to King William IV and to Queen Victoria.

Andrew Smith’s father, also called Andrew Smith, was an engineer and inventor with several patents to his name, most importantly those for the making of wire ropes, granted from 1835 to 1849. The younger Andrew Smith was initially apprenticed to a machine shop and drawing office. In 1852 both father and son set sail for California, where the father had an interest in some gold mines in Mariposa County. These proved disappointing, and the father returned to England in 1853. The son, however, remained in California, and became a gold miner whilst also working as a blacksmith, surveyor and builder of bridges.

In 1856, whilst working on the construction of a flume at a mine at American Bar, Hallidie was consulted over the rapid rate of wear on the ropes used to lower cars of rock from the mine to the mill. These ropes were wearing out in 75 days. Hallidie improvised machinery to make a replacement wire rope, which lasted two years, and in the process began wire rope manufacture in California.

Wire rope and bridges

Hallidie abandoned mining in 1857 and returned to San Francisco. Under the name of A. S. Hallidie & Co., he commenced the manufacture of wire rope in a building at Mason and Chestnut Streets, using the machinery from American Bar.

Hallidie was also heavily involved in bridge building. During 1861-2, he constructed bridges across the Klamath River at Weitchpeck, at Nevada City, across the American River at Folsom, and across the Bear, Trinity, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne rivers. In 1863 he built a bridge across the Fraser River, 10 miles upstream of Yale at Alexandra in British Columbia.

Also in 1863, Hallidie married Martha Elizabeth Woods. They had no children. In 1864, he became a United States citizen. In 1865, he gave up bridge building in order to devote himself entirely to his wire rope manufacturing business, which was experiencing increased demand from the silver mines on the Comstock Lode.

In 1867, Hallidie invented the Hallidie ropeway, a form of aerial tramway used for transporting ore and other material across mountainous districts, which he successfully installed a number of locations, and later patented.

Cable cars

Accounts differ as to exactly how involved Hallidie was in the inception of the Clay Street Hill Railway. One version has him taking over the promotion of the line when the original promoter, Benjamin Brooks, failed to raise the necessary capital. In another version, Hallidie was the instigator, inspired by a desire to reduce the suffering incurred by the horses that hauled streetcars up Jackson Street, from Kearny to Stockton Street.

There is also doubt as to when exactly the first run of the cable car occurred. The franchise required a first run no later than August 1, 1873, however at least one source reports that the run took place a day late, on August 2, but that the city chose not to void the franchise. Some accounts say that the first gripman hired by Hallidie looked down the steep hill from Jones and refused to operate the car, so Hallidie took the grip himself and ran the car down the hill and up again without any problems.

The engineer of the Clay Street line was William Eppelsheimer. However, given Hallidie’s previous experience of cables and cable haulage systems, it seems unlikely that he did not contribute to the design of the system.

The Clay Street line started regular service on September 1, 1873 and was a financial success. In addition, Hallidie’s patents on the cable car design were stringently enforced on cable car promoters around the world, and made him a rich man.

Other activities

Hallidie occupied many positions in San Francisco society. He served as a regent of the University of California from 1868 until his death, and as a trustee and vice-president of the San Francisco Mechanics Institute in 1864 and president from 1868 to 1877 and from 1893 to 1895. In 1873, Hallidie stood for election to the California State Senate, and in 1875 he stood for election as mayor of San Francisco, but in both cases he was defeated.

Hallidie served as trustee of the First Unitarian Church, and as its moderator in 1883 and 1884. He held memberships in the American Society of Inventors, American Geographical Society, California Academy of Sciences, and other scientific and literary bodies. He was a member of the old California Historical Society and of the Pacific-Union, Olympic, and Sierra clubs.

A. S. Hallidie & Co. became the California Wire Works in 1883 with Hallidie as president. In 1895, it was sold to Washburn and Moen Co., the oldest manufacturers of wire in the United States (established in 1831).

Hallidie died at the age of 65 at his San Francisco residence.

The Smith Machine

The Smith Machine

The main concern of the Smith Machine is that they do not replicate perfect form, and thus do not use stabiliser muscles.  In a perfect world, every person would have unlimited time to work every finite muscle in their body – but in reality most of us don’t!  The reality is, people are in a hurry in today’s busy age, and Smith Machines may be just the thing they are looking for!

Smith Machines offer a great full body workout for people on the run or who are unable to get a gym.  They are not too big and can easily fit into the corner of a room or shed.

• Deadlifts
• Squats
• Behind the Neck Press
• Military Press
• Decline Bench Press (with adjustable or decline bench)
• Incline Bench Press
• Bench Press

The Smith Machine offers many benefits which you would not be able to get using conventional free weights. For example, the Smith Machine can be used for a high variety of exercises that any one regular machine would not be able to accommodate. For example, a flat bench in itself can be used for flat dumbbell or barbell presses, but unless it is designed to also include the incline, the number of exercises you can perform will be severely restricted. A Smith Machine, based on it’s construction, can be used for so many different exercises that you will be able to do a full body workout using the machine alone! When you incorporate an adjustable bench, you will be able to perform any of the following exercises using the Smith Machine:

Also, because the barbell cannot fall forwards, backwards or sideways, a Smith Machine is considered safer to use than an ordinary barbell. Since the weight does not need to be stabilized, this can allow lifters to lift more weight.

The Smith Machine is a piece of equipment used in weight training. It consists of a barbell that is fixed within vertical posts, allowing only vertical movement.  Behind each vertical post are a series of slots on which the barbell can be hooked. The Smith machine has a dozen or more slots which allow the bar to be parked at any position along the rail by simply rotating the bar. This means that unlike an ordinary barbell, the Smith machine does not need to be re-racked once you have finished your lift – it can be secured at any point. This makes it safer for those who do not use a spotter, as you only need to twist your wrist in order to lock the barbell in place in the event that the weight becomes too great. Many models are designed with adjustable stoppers, which can be placed to automatically stop the barbell at a selected height, providing protection for the lifter during an emergency.

Watch Ishe Smith Vs Fernando Guerrero Boxing Live Stream

“I have decided that I will watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream at watchboxing.net on July 16.”
“Have you? That is interesting. What is it? Some kind of do or die championship bout or some such?”
“No, nothing like that. More like an up and comer against a ring veteran sort of thing.”
“Then that is even more surprising. I didn’t know you were that interested in the sport. What made you decide that you will watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream?”
“Oh, I’ve always been interested in the sport of boxing. And in fact, I much prefer this sort of a bout. The championship fights and all the hoopla that surrounds them, well, let’s just say, I don’t find all that interesting.”
“This sort of a bout. What is it about this sort of a bout that makes you want to watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream?”
“As I said, it is a boxing match between an up and comer and a veteran. What that means is that when I watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream at watchboxing.net, I will, in essence, be watching the try-outs, as it were, for the championship run.”
“You are going to have to expand on that for me.”
“Okay. Ishe Smith, the 31 year old veteran, with a 24 win 3 loss record is one of those boxers who, in spite of talent and 21 KOs to his credit, is probably never going to get a shot at any title fights. It happens that way, sometimes, in all professional sports. Fernando Guerrero, on the other hand is, a 23 year old stormer with 18 wins in 18 fights, [14 of them by knockout] currently rocketing his way up the title contention ladder. So, as I watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream, I expect to watch a sort of examination of young Guerrero, [which means Warrior in Spanish], to see if he can graduate to the next level, closer to the top.”
“When you watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream you will be watching an exam?”
“More like an Underwriter’s Laboratories proving trial. You see, Very few, if any, of Guerrero’s fight have gone the distance, ten rounds. This suggests that if young G runs into a boxer, who knows how to take a hit, he could be in trouble. Smith, with his considerably higher ring time, has proven himself capable of both taking and giving punishing hits.”
“I see. So when you watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream it is a bit like watching the qualifying rounds in, say, the World Cup.”
“Succinctly put. Yes. And that is why when I watch Ishe Smith vs Fernando Guerrero boxing live stream at watchboxing.net, I intend to register and get access to watch upcoming Boxing Fights Online. They will be instructive and the information will come in handy for when I place my bets. Call it research. Should be tax deductible.”

“Hey, want to come over to my place on the 16th of July? We can watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming at watchboxing.net together.”
“Who vs. who?”
“Shouldn’t that be ‘whom’?”
“What?”
“Who vs. who? Shouldn’t that be who vs. whom?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Grammar.”
“Grammar? Your invitation to watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming is an invitation to watch a grammar contest?”
“No. My invitation to watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming is an invitation to watch a boxing match. Although, the concept of a grammar smack down is strangely intriguing. Certainly, I know of people who use grammar as a weapon. It might be fun to see them slugging it out. ‘Guerrero throws a verb clause and Smith counters with an adjectival phrase. Guerrero counters by blocking the move with punctuation.’”
“Are you done?”
“Yes, I think so.”
“Good. Now, can we get back to your invitation to watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming at watchboxing.net watchboxing.net?”
“Yes, I think so.”
“Okay. Now. Pay attention and answer the question. Who are the two gentlemen I will be looking at, when, if, I watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming? I’ve never heard of them. Why should I burn up bandwidth watching two fighters about whom, [ah, I see what you mean], I know nothing.”
“Since you put it that way … This fight is going to be worth watching because of the match up. Fernando Guerrero is a 23 year old middleweight from the Dominican Republic, with an impressive if not extensive fight record. His opponent, Ishe ‘Sugar Shay’ Smith, is a 31 year old light middleweight born and bred in Las Vegas, Nevada and brings to the bout an extensive, if not particularly productive fight history. That record has, however, shown that Smith is capable of going the distance of the ten round bout while punishing his opponent. Guerrero, on the other hand, has won every one of his 18 professional, 14 by knockout, fights without having to sustain a full bout effort. When we watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming we will be watching to see if Guerrero can go the distance. Think of it as a proving ground for future more championship oriented fights.”
“A proving ground?”
“Yes. Guerrero, for his part in the proceedings, needs to show that he is capable of a sustained effort. That he doesn’t just depend on his power and guile to end the fight quickly. Smith is a punishing battler. His 24-3 fight record shows that. Nota bene; only 9 of those 21 victories were by knockout.”
“Goodness gracious me. There is more to this business of professional boxing than I had first understood.”
“Yes indeedy. That is why when we watch Fernando Guerrero vs Ishe Smith July Live Streaming at watchboxing.net, I intend to register and get access to watch upcoming Boxing Fights Online. Think of it as a continuing education program, from the comfort of my den.”
“Sounds like a plan.”

So Long Mr. Carl Smith!

So Long Mr. Carl Smith!

Carl Smith, legendary country singer and original honky tonk hitmaker, died on January 16 at his home in Fanklin, TN. He was 82. Smith, affectionately called “Mr. Country,” was also the ex-husband of June Carter Cash and a respected veteran who had over 30 No. 1 hits throughout his career which began in the 1950’s.

A native of Maynardville, TN, Smith was known for his special brand of country music love songs such as “You Are The One,” “This Orchard Means Goodbye,” “(When You Feel Like You’re in Love) Don’t Just Stand There,” as well as hits such as “Hey Joe!,” “Let’s Live a Little,” “Cut Across Shorty,” “Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way,” and “Loose Talk.” According to a country music blog, upon his retirement in the latter part of the 1970’s, Smith was officially inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2003.

Smith’s long career first began in 1944 when he served in the military during World War II at the WROL radio station in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then performed alongside bands and artists such as Skeets Williamson, Molly O’Day, and Archie Campbell. Around that time, Smith was also writing songs and producing demos, one of which reached Troy Martin, who at that time, was an executive for Peer-Southern. Martin, in turn, brought the demo to Jack Stapp, a WSM Nashville executive, and Don Law, producer for Columbia. On the strength of his demo, Smith was signed to the label, and the rest is history.

In 1950, he appeared on the Grand Ole Opry as the guest of Hank Williams who also performed that same day; he eventually became a regular until 1956. His first hit with Columbia, “Let’s Live a Little,” came the following year and peaked at the No. 2 spot in the charts. Within a year, he had more hits including the classic country music love songs “If Teardrops Were Pennies” and his first No. 1, “Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way.” This same year also marked his marriage to June Carter, whom he would later divorce. His daughter with Carter, Carlene Carter, later became a country singer just like her famous parents. In 1957, Smith married another singer, Goldie Hill, who passed away in 2005.

As mentioned in another country music blog, aside from his hit songs, Smith was also known as one of the first group of young country stars to cross over to television and movies. Smith appeared on the “Main Street Music Hall,” and other shows such as “Stars Of Country Music.” In 1961, he also made a guest appearance on “Four Star Jubilee,” a country television series which aired over at ABC. Smith would eventually go on to host his own show, “Carl Smith’s Country Music Hall” for US and Canadian audiences.

As a successful singer, Smith stayed with Columbia Records until 1975, and then transferred to ABC/Hickory. It is with this label that he eventually decided to announce his retirement in the latter part of the 1970’s.

Known for his unique brand of country music love songs, Mr. Country will surely be missed by his fans and by the entire Nashville community.
